wot? vacation/holiday

with one comment

Off tomorrow morning, very early, for a two week trip to Florida. I’m hoping to post from there, maybe even frequently, but the internet requires me to take an elevator and sit in a room next to the shuffleboard area, so we’ll have to see…

Funny. 3 months here and I’m starting to feel a bit died in the wool (mericanism? has to be, right?) norf london. * Will I be able to cope wifout my daily visit to the heath? What will it be like to eat full portions of food, even mexican food? To buy books? To read the full paper version of the nytimes? I am starting to require, almost on a dietary level, daily bitching updates about the priceoffood/taxes/airportmayhem/kenlivingstone’sdrinking/tescochickens. Luckily, I’ve always been pasty, so it won’t be so much of a shock to bring that back with me.
A few years ago, I wasn’t so big on florida, but that’s all changed. It’s a greater NYC thing, I think. One grows into it. (See Wallace Stevens, among others). When I was a little kid, we had a screened-in porch on the back of our house that was called “the florida room.” Anyway, wish me luck with terminal 5. I’m headed there in less than six hours.
** It’s not just me. Everyone asks/tells us about our daughter developing a “london accent.” Londoners tell us just what accent she’ll develop based on the postcode we’ll be occupying soon. But one charming / not charming early development is the fact that if you say anything to her that she either doesn’t hear or doesn’t want to hear, she replies with a shouted “Wot?” It’s very cute / not cute

  1. Heh, have fun!

(Your daughter sounds like she’ll be a regular Eliza Doolittle before long! And if that sounds unpleasant, remember that my nephew (with a slight hearing problem) responds to everything with a “huh?” or an “uuuuuuh?”)
