They provide a psychological (fantasy) wage. Behind the conformism and homogeneity of white, middle-class suburbia, life is sexy and full of transgressions. The medium is truly the message here. It’s the show itself that makes the tedium of the 80 hour workweek or the cut-and-paste ‘burbs barely bearable.

And isn’t Sarah Palin a version of this, too? A hockey-mom that morphs into Chuck Norris?
